There are so many romantic comedies and some are unforgettable and others, lets face it are very forgettable! Here is a list of five films which will not be forgotten and are certainly worthy of any top five list.
This is a classic eighties film with an appealing rags to riches theme. A prostitute meets a wealthy man and they fall in love, he rescues her from a life on the streets. It is a bit predictable, but what woman hasn’t dreamt of being swept off her feet by a handsome rich man? It is great to be carried away with this fantasy for a while and with a happy ending this film certainly has a high feel good factor. With Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, there is nothing to dislike about this classic love story and Richard Gere is always worth watching, isn’t he?
Again this film has quite a predictable script, but being English it has a more realistic storyline if not just as sickly sweet at the end. There are a whole selection of couples in this film and therefore it is almost like a series of intermingled short films which keeps your attention and keeps it fun. Some of the story lines are quite moving and serious but others are just plain silly. The ending is pretty cheesy, but then you would expect that from this sort of film! It does have quite a few memorable laugh out loud moments.
When Harry Met Sally
This film is based around a man who says that it is not possible to have a friend of the opposite sex and keep things platonic. It follows the couple through various relationships and has a very typical romantic scene where one of the couple is runny through rainy streets to catch up with their loved one, before it was too late. There are some hilarious moments too.
Down With Love
This film is rather less predictable than some other romantic comedies, although the ending is predictable as always, but you do wonder whether they will ever get together. The setting makes it seem rather more romantic and Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor are fantastic, as you would expect really. She has written a book about how women do not need love and a man is asked to review it but he decides to try to prove her wring and she is determined that he won’t. Of course, we can all guess how it ends, but it is funny and satisfying.
Never Been Kissed
This is a great film for anyone who has had a hard time in high school. Drew Barrymore has to return to high school to do a newspaper story and she had a hard enough time the first time round. Has a great feel good factor as she works to get in with the ‘in crowd’, falls in love with a teacher and realises how unimportant popularity is when you have good friends. Typical American happy ending but still feels good.
